"Voices" was originally recorded as the B-side to the single "No More Lies," which came out in the UK in January 1988.
Executives at Polydor in Germany considered "Voices" to be exceptionally strong — matching the quality of Numan's classic electronic era — and chose to promote it as an A-side single on its own.
The German release (Catalog No: 887 613-7) included a dedicated 7-inch and a 12-inch extended mix maxi-single.
Bill Sharpe (keyboardist for Shakatak) and Gary Numan first collaborated on the 1985 hit "Change Your Mind", leading to intermittent joint projects and eventually their 1989 joint album, Automatic.
